Dd did group violin lessons this past school year and just never really took to it. She enjoyed it and did well, but was never terribly interested in practising more than she needed to to be able to play the songs given to her and never just experimented making music with it.
I hear her in the background now playing "O Canada" by ear on the piano. Near the end of her violin lessons, she was practising most of her music on the piano during the week instead of on the violin, all by ear.
I believe she picked the wrong instrument to study last year...

I like John Holts theory that you should never call it 'practice'......you should just 'play'......
I'd love to hear why you are so keen on Montessori methods.....what lead you to that originally?
Ooooh... That's good. Dd's thinking she does want to do piano lessons this coming year and I was going to have a talk with her about how it's going to be more expensive than violing and we have to make sure she practises, but it really should just be to make sure she plays.
I'm very hesitant about getting her started on piano lessons because she is so used to just doing it freely, but with lessons, you have to have the 'play' time between lessons or it's a waste of money!
